Our Afternoon Tea with a Little Extra Harrogate Style Tour got off to a flying start this month with a visit from the ladies from the Vino and Stitch Methley WI in Leeds. After Julie had visited us on our Harrogate Tour earlier this year with her husband, she came back to enjoy our new offering with her friends this summer. Enjoying a traditional Afternoon Tea over three lovely historic venues, we not only learned about the social history of Harrogate but also about the etiquette surrounding the delightful ceremony of Afternoon Tea – and I learned a few things myself about etiquette, sharing knowledge and stories is part of the fun of this experience!. Lots of issues were raised – should we hold up our pinky when drinking tea or eating sandwiches? Should we put the milk in first? How are we meant to drink our tea? Saucer up, saucer down? Dunking of biscuits? It is a minefield – who knew!
Our Vegan Tour has had quite a few visitors this summer and the deliciousness of the food offered would make many non-vegans turn. We have lamented in the past about the lack of exclusively vegan and vegetarian places in Harrogate but the truth is, they have tried and been unable to compete with restaurants offering a wider menu. Sad as that is, the truth is many restaurants in Harrogate have taken on board the lifestyle choices of the population and now offer better and better vegan choices on their menu. Quantro now offer a vegan menu, Cardamom Black have a good range, Farmhouse, Yorkshire Tapas – the choice is there and it is improving all the time. So don’t despair if you can’t find an exclusively vegan restaurant, there is still a great offering out there. Yorkshire Appetite has started exploring vegan options in York and discovered the taste of ‘Once across the Garden’ – a little street food place in the heart of the city on Church Street with a great selection of dishes you can eat in or takeaway. We had a delicious sweet and sour explosion of tofu taste. So next time you are in York and you fancy a snack, try something different.
You may have seen around Harrogate, the posters are up – the Harrogate Food and Drink Festival is coming to Ripley Castle over the bank holiday weekend, Saturday to Monday, from 10 am. You can visit and be delighted by live chef demos, live music, street food, artisan markets, children’s activities and much more. And of course we will be there and we have some little morsels to encourage you to visit us. Mr Vegan Cakes is supplying his vegan brownies and rocky road and we will have some interesting beers for you to sample. We will also be running a prize draw to win a food tour for two – the winner can choose from any of our four tours. Gift vouchers will be available to buy for the birthdays and anniversaries of friends and loved ones or of course just come along and say hello!
