May Newsletter – Don’t ask for ‘normal milk’ at a Vegan Festival!

on May 21, 2019

A little tip for you there! Last Sunday Yorkshire Appetite went to the Great Yorkshire Vegan Festival. If you were ever in doubt that more and more people are embracing a plant based lifestyle then this was the place to dispel those thoughts. Leeds Town Hall was heaving and it was a great atmosphere with people from all over the county visiting to enjoy the stalls. There was vegan food galore and a particular highlight was the beetroot pie from Vork Pies and the sushi was delicious. Look out too for Plant Pod, selling delicious breakfast cereals, hopefully a welcome new addition to grab and go soon. The talks about the benefits of veganism in fighting ill health were inspiring and the range of goods available amazing – not everyone there was vegan but everyone was embracing the possibilities and enjoying the vibe. We were there promoting our Vegan tour which to date has welcomed as many non vegans as vegans so maybe a few converts…. Come and try…..

The big York Food and Drink Festival happens in September but did you know they have an excellent Taster Festival on the weekend of the 8th and 9th June, an event which is bigger than many main festivals. Over the course of the two days there will be demonstrations aplenty in the centre of York. Check out the programme on their website ( – you can choose from a mini cookery lesson from the new Grand Cookery School or a speed tasting of gins and whiskies (that has to be (a favourite, surely). There are demos from big names like Steph Moon (Chef Consultant at Rudding Park) and Neil Bendinck (chef at Skosh restaurant). Yorkshire Appetite are running their York Food Tour as part of the festival on the Sunday which has a very good discount rate for the festival so if you have been planning on doing the York Tour, then now is a good time to get 15% off with the code YFEST19 !

Our new offering is an Afternoon Tea Tour with a little something extra. The Afternoon Tea offered is a traditional offering, small dainty sandwiches, cake and some delicious scones, jam and cream with of course lots of TEA! The little extra is experiencing the tea over three historic venues, learning about the Victorian social scene of Harrogate and the custom and etiquette of this delightful English ritual. We visit the Harrogate Tea Rooms, set in the beautiful Victorian Westminster arcade where Tony Wilkinson of The Harrogate Tea Company will show us the proper way to serve tea in these delightful surroundings. Then we go onto the Palm Court Café for sandwiches and cake in this elegant tea room overlooking the cultural centre of the town. Our final stop is the beautiful historic St George hotel for our scones and more tea where guests can linger whilst looking out at the Royal Hall where high society would gather through the Harrogate social season. So if you can’t decide where to have Afternoon Tea, why not have it at three places and leave feeling affinity for those Victorian ladies who frequented Harrogate in the spa heyday.
