Mother’s Day: Celebrating with Food Traditions

Mother’s Day: Celebrating with Food Traditions

Spring is in the air and one of those Spring Traditions is the much loved Mothers Day.  As we emerge from under the deluge of the winter rain, we have the chance to spend time with and show our appreciation to all the mother figures in our lives.  Whether it’s breakfast in bed for your mum, Afternoon Tea with your gran or a Sunday Roast for the ladies at Sunday School, its all about being together.

The celebration of Mother’s Day rose from the old British Tradition of Mothering Sunday which is the 4th Sunday of Lent and also called Simnel Sunday.  This was the one day of the year that domestic servants and live in apprentices were given the day off to go back to the church where they were christened – the ‘Mother Church’.  It was also an opportunity to check in on their relatives, especially their mothers, to see if all were ok.  At this time of year, food stocks tended to be low after the long winter so a fruit-filled simnel cake was much appreciated.

In the UK, we like to keep Mother’s Day to a traditional Sunday however more modern day celebrations have been influenced by the USA who have encouraged us to show our love and appreciation with a hand painted card, a bunch of flowers or some delicious chocolates. (Note to my daughters: ‘or all three’).

At Yorkshire Appetite, we think the best way to show your love and appreciation of your mother or grandma or other mother figure in your life is to spend the special day on a food tour around the delightful spa town of Harrogate.  On Sunday March 15th, we are offering a special Food Tour, visiting five independent eateries to taste the best Harrogate has to offer – why have lunch at one place when you can try five!  Relaxed, sociable, a lovely way to share time and delicious food together and mothers will receive a special Yorkshire Appetite Goodie Bag to take home.
