Yorkshire food is warm and welcoming, like our people. Our meals are hearty and comforting. As our founder, Kay, puts it, they’re like a “hug in a dish”.
Our newest food tour celebrates the great produce from our lush landscapes and the people who make it to give you a true Taste of Yorkshire.
Why we created the Taste of Yorkshire Food Tour
For over nine years, we have been welcoming guests to our Yorkshire towns and cities. We’ve shared the stories and food from the amazing range of diverse cuisines and cultures Yorkshire has to offer with hundreds of people.
And while they have always enjoyed our food tours, many of our international guests started asking us where they could try traditional Yorkshire food.
We didn’t want to replace our popular York Food Tour because people love the fusion of flavours it gives them. We felt there was a place for a new food tour focused on traditional, authentic Yorkshire dishes. That’s when the idea for the Taste of Yorkshire was born.
There was only one place we could host the food tour: our historic capital, York. With so many places in York still serving traditional Yorkshire food, we knew it was the perfect location.
What to expect on the Taste of Yorkshire
Our aim with all our tours is always to provide a great experience with delicious food and knowledgeable guides. And our Taste of Yorkshire Food Tour is no different.
Over the course of an afternoon, you’ll be guided to five independent restaurants across York that serve traditional Yorkshire food. But more than that, you’ll hear the history and background behind the food you’re eating.
Your guide will also share stories about Yorkshire, our people and our traditions as you stroll between tasting stops. By the end of your tour, you’ll know what a turf cake and a snickleway are.
You’ll also have the chance to admire some of York’s most famous sights, from the Minster to the Shambles, as you walk from tasting stop to tasting stop.
What you’ll taste along the way
We’re so proud to have met and worked with fantastic entrepreneurs, chefs and the local hospitality sector since 2017. Our new Yorkshire food tour has given us the chance to connect with even more fantastic venues serving fabulous food with a warm welcome.
With an abundance of independent places in York serving traditional Yorkshire food, we were spoilt for choice when it came to tasting partners. After sampling several delicious options (a hard job, we know!), we managed to narrow it down to five to give you a Taste of Yorkshire in one afternoon.
At your first stop, you’ll taste Yorkshire cheeses paired with locally brewed beer. Yorkshire puddings make an appearance, of course. It would be wrong of us to create a Yorkshire food tour without them. You’ll tuck into a pud served with succulent beef and lashings of gravy.
Next on the menu is a tasting of light and crispy fish and chips. While many shops use vegetable oil to cook their fish and chips, the traditional Yorkshire way is to use beef dripping. A tradition that our tasting partner still proudly honours.
You’ll also try a traditional Yorkshire tart and a popular regional sweet. You’ll end your tour by sampling locally made hot chocolate, which is a big part of York’s heritage. An afternoon well spent with think!
Plan your Taste of Yorkshire Food Tour
Our Taste of Yorkshire tour is perfect if you’re an international traveller looking to try our county’s famous delicacies.
If you’re from the UK, you’re welcome to join us too. Maybe you’re from the south or elsewhere in the country and want to try our local dishes. Or perhaps you’re from the north and want a taste of home or a bit of nostalgia.
The Taste of Yorkshire Food Tours are available on selected Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays throughout the year. They last around three and a half hours and cost £75 per person.
Your guide will meet you beside York Minster at 12 noon before your tour begins. You’ll then set off across York for an afternoon of proper Yorkshire food and hospitality.
