Countdown to the New Tours!
September 2023

All the children are back at school, the t-shirts and sandals
are slowly being replaced by coats and boots and autumn is settling in. However, good things are on the horizon. We have not one but TWO tours starting this
autumn.
Our Ripon Tour which will open your heart to this old city is a great mixture of history – and Ripon has a lot of that – and great food as Ripon has quite the community of the independent eateries producing some fantastic tasty food. What a great way to spend a day discovering this North Yorkshire gem. The tours are on a Wednesday to provide you with an exciting mid week activity and there are dates already on the website from 8th November for you to book on.
What’s Ripon got I hear you ask. Well, history wise, some believe it is the oldest city in England with it dating back to the 7th century. While Colchester and others may beg to disagree you cannot deny its ancient charms. It has a most majestic cathedral and every evening the town’s hornblower blows a horn at the 4 corners of the market square. Known as the ‘settling the watch’ ritual, it has happened daily for over a thousand years and attracts visitors from all over the world. King Alfred the Great visited the city when he was fresh from his victory over the Vikings and liked it so much, he gave the city a Royal town charter. The horn was to remind the townsfolk the watch was set and they could sleep safely protected from the Vikings should they return. It is the fourth smallest city in England with a population of around 16,000 and has played a fascinating part in the history of the justice system. You can visit the Courthouse Museum and the Prison Museum to see what punishments were doled out in the 1830s. Who has any Australian relatives? Did they begin their journey here?
The independent scene is one big community in Ripon and there are plenty of eateries to choose from. We have chosen a selection of great food based on quality and taste and the welcome of the hosts – ranging from delicate Indian flavours to Latin influences to traditional Yorkshire fare, your taste buds will be very happy. We look forward to seeing you soon.
We also have our Indian Food Tour of Leeds starting soon. Dates from November will be released soon. Do contact us if you want a personal reminder when we go on sale. It is the first time we are offering an evening time slot. Leeds is a buzzing city and this will be a great experience for that Christmas do with a difference. We are being welcomed by five great Indian restaurants in the city centre and the flavours are out of this world. Don’t worry about excessive heat – these dishes are fully flavoursome without the need for numbing your mouth! A mixture of the traditional and the very latest flavour trends and fusion dishes, this is quite the tour for exotic flavour. Not only that, how good is your history of Leeds? Did you know it’s the birthplace of the internet? Fizzy drinks were invented here AND we have one of the biggest parks in Europe. Yes, and Ricky Wilson is from Leeds (Kaiser Chief fans in the house).
There is still time to win a place on our first tour by sending in a video clip – see here for details and I’ll just say, we have not had a huge amount of entries so your odds of success are high! Are people shy?
Finally, we are at the York Food Festival this weekend in association with Yorkshire Mark so come and say hello!
