Go Queenie! Alternative Ways to celebrate the Jubilee
May Newsletter

It’s only just over two weeks away now folks so have you decided how you are going to celebrate the jubilee of our very own Queen? Having scoured the destination websites for Yorkshire, I can summarise the offerings – a weekend of family fun with entertainment, music, stalls for you to buy things, drinking and afternoon tea mostly outdoors in a lovely sunny bank holiday vibe. There will be lots of union jacks, Pimms, scones, and bunting, yes bunting is likely to make a huge appearance. There are two big events in Harrogate – on the Stray and in the Valley Gardens. In York, all the major attractions are having themed events that weekend and all villages will, indeed, have bunting.
Of course, at Yorkshire Appetite we love an excuse for bunting too and we are offering our own Platinum Jubilee Afternoon Tea Event – a stroll around the Valley Gardens (avoiding above family entertainment and maybe the odd unicyclist) reminding ourselves why the royals love a Harrogate Visit then we are retiring to Palm Court Café for a lesson on etiquette and of course a FANTASTIC Afternoon Tea – freshly prepared by Kathryn’s fair hand. So get your tickets now, before they all go!
Other ways to celebrate the Jubilee:
Hosting your own street party/garden party. I should source your scones, ingredients, catering now as these will be in prime demand as we approach the weekend. It’s time to dress up too. I expect you have spent many an hour thinking about what you would wear if you were invited to the Palace, so now, just in case the invite is lost in the post, get that outfit on. Brush off those hats and heels (ladies, although no judgement) and dress to the nines. There are not enough opportunities to wear fascinators if you ask me.
You could of course go another way and wear Union Jack clothes all weekend. Look what it did for Ginger Spice in the 1990s and let’s face it, it is the only time you will have the opportunity as it’s likely to be a while till we reach the World Cup final again. You could paint your face with the flag or if you want to be more subtle, just wear a selection of red, white and blue clothing and see if anyone notices!
Of course, another way to celebrate royalness is to spend the weekend speaking like a royal. You could do it all weekend but it might be a bit tricky to keep up. There is a possible downside in that should you find yourself talking to a minor royal or a Harrogate Glitterati then they may think you are actually making fun of their RP accents. This may be best kept to the family garden party.
Then there are various ways you could affect royalness during the weekend. Something simple like waving in a queen like fashion at everyone as you go past. Wearing a crown (or a tiara, I would go for the everyday jewels for security’s sake). You could wear a cape or train and have your children walk behind you for the weekend carrying it. Get your sons to dress in dark suits with an earpiece and stand near you alertly at all times in public. But most of all, just enjoy it. We all hope that the sun is just saving itself for that weekend but we also now the unpredictability of the British weather so have your brollies handy but enjoy it whatever, it’s a fantastic excuse for one big party!
