Places to try this Festive Season in Harrogate and York
December 2021

Happy Christmas fellow foodies. This is a great season for
trying out such a huge range of delicious foods. My current favourites are chocolate covered
figs and Christmas pudding ice cream (thank you Vanillis). Despite the vague spectre of a cancelled Christmas
looming, people are still venturing out to restaurants to enjoy the delights on
offer so I thought I would share with you,
some restaurants, new and not so new, that I have heard good things
about. When people come on the tour, I
always like to hear about where they have eaten, where they would recommend and
so here are some that I can share with you.
Ate O’clock is a cosy and inviting restaurant tucked away on High Ousegate in the centre of York. Recommended by locals of York as a place which serves a straightforward menu done really well. Steaks, burgers and traditional dishes using high quality, locally sourced ingredients and freshly cooked to order. It is a family run business who believe in personal touch so it has a lovely friendly atmosphere with a great value set menu at 17.95 for two courses as well as lunch menus and A La Carte.
For our vegan visitors, we have a new vegan café in Harrogate. Nourish opened recently and recommended highly by some of our Harrogate visitors, it has a great plant based menu and is open Wednesday to Sunday 9.30 am to 3.30 pm so a great place for breakfast or lunch. It is on the edge of the centre in Mayfield Grove but the innovative menu means you have some delights in store.
Known as ‘the little Italian restaurant down the stairs by Micklegate’ Delrios has been a name often championed by our York visitors. This cellar bar is atmospheric, lit by candlelight and run successfully for 30 years by Giovanni Delrio and his family serving home cooked Italian food with a strong Sicilian influence. Visitors are delighted with its friendly rustic atmosphere and the attentiveness of the staff.
Keeping on the Italian theme, Vividos in Harrogate is worth a mention. I last visited here quite a number of years ago and while the food was fine the service left us wanting so it had been a place I had avoided. However, it was taken over by Michael and Louise in 2019 and when asking our visitors to Harrogate where they had enjoyed eating, Vividos came up again and again. So finally, went back to give it another go and it was indeed an excellent experience. It has a good ambience, good acoustics so not too loud and the food was delicious and the staff could not do enough for us. Post lockdown they also added a great outdoors dining space so looking forward to that in the spring
So, food lovers, a few festive suggestions for you there if you get sick of turkey sandwiches! Don’t forget there is still ten more sleeps till Xmas and ten more days to get those gift vouchers or goodie boxes ordered! So I will leave you with a festive joke: Where does Father Christmas like to enjoy a mixture of badminton, horse-riding and subtropical swimming? Santa Parks! Sorry.
Happy Christmas from all of us at Yorkshire Appetite and may 2022 be full of flavour!
