The Man behind the Award Winning White House Gin
September 2022

We are very pleased this month to profile Nick Jocelyn, the man behind the White House Gin. Those of you who have experienced our Otley Food Tour have tasted this gin and loved it! The London Spirits Competition is an international celebration of Gin which looks for top quality spirits which offer great value for money and White House Gin was deservedly presented with a Silver Award this year. We thought it was time our Yorkshire Appetite followers knew a little bit more about our tasting partner, Nick and White House Gin Distillery.
Nick is a born and bred Yorkshireman who has now lived in Otley for over 20 years. He worked for many years as a chef in both the UK and France and discovered a love for gin about ten years ago. Over the following years, his interest grew and so did his knowledge of the drink. He spent several years experimenting with different botanicals before coming to the perfect blend he uses today. They contain just a hint of home grown hops which pays homage to Otley’s pub culture; for many years Otley held the record for the town with the most pubs per resident in the UK.
His journey began with a mini still and a license obtained from the HMRC. Nikki, Nick’s partner, treated him to a week’s course in distilling where he met ‘the gentleman of gin’, Jamie Barrett, who is a renowned craft distilling expert and a fantastic and inspirational mentor. The ‘Ginaisance’ was occurring and this gave Nick the opportunity to move forward now he had the recipe and the know how. Now he needed a distillery and he found a space in an old mill on the banks of the River Wharfe and set about creating the state of the art distillery they use to create their distinctive spirits.
Looking over the town and the distillery is the White House which gave the gin its name. Half way up the Chevin in Otley, this house is known by all in the town and has become somewhat of a symbol for the town. It was in ruins until 1850 when a stone mason called Ben Naylor rebuilt it and set up home there. This history is why White House Gin has the hammer and chisel stamped into each bottle stopper. If you prefer rum to gin, don’t worry! Nick also makes Hammered Coin Spiced Rum which is a delight and also well worth drinking. If you would like anymore information then contact Nick through the website White House Gin.
Otley itself has a long history as a market town reaching back over 800 years and it nestles happily between the imposing Chevin and the river. It has become somewhat of a centre for good wholesome food Looking up towards the Chevin, you can see a white house and it has become a centre for creative independent businesses with many artisans and not one, but three award winning family butchers. This reputation for good food brought Yorkshire Appetite to the town and we now run an Otley Tour for groups of 4 or more. We are putting on a special Otley tour on Wednesday 16th November so good timing for those who want to experience some delicious food and maybe do a bit of culinary Christmas shopping at the same time (no obligation!). Yes, the tour does include tastings from the White House Gin Distillery. If you would like to join us on the tour then drop us an email at kay@yorkshireappetite.com. Spaces limited so don’t wait too long! In the meantime, at the earliest opportunity, try White House Gin, you won’t be disappointed.
