Welcome to The Aperitif Guy
February Newsletter

This month, we have a new member of the Yorkshire Appetite Team to introduce to you, we have an Otley Tour running for all those who have been asking for a date, we remind you of the great Yorkshire Rhubarb Festival and a new treat for Vegans!
First of all, let us introduce our new Harrogate Guide, Paul Fogarty. Known to many already as The Aperitif Guy, Paul is a food writer and cocktail specialist who came to Harrogate over 20 years ago and immediately fell in love with its lively, independent food and drinks scene. Although his first love is for classic French food, his favourite places to eat in Harrogate are Italian. (See if you can guess which ones.) He is also a great fan of the Harrogate beer scene, he believes the town should be particularly proud of its beers. With 7 great breweries in the HG postcode area, every taste and preference is catered for, and all these breweries are well represented in our independent pubs and bars. Paul writes under the name The Aperitif Guy. You can get to know him a little better by following him on social media and subscribing to his blog: blog.theaperitifguy.co.uk
Yorkshire Appetite’s latest food experience comes from a place very close to our hearts – Otley, an historic market town on the River Wharfe in the Yorkshire Dales. It has a long history, which runs from pre-historic art on the Chevin, a roman road, cattle markets for over 800 years, the woollen and printing press industries, birthplace of Thomas Chippendale and TV locations. Otley is a small market town with a big heart. It has lots of thriving independent businesses, weekly markets, a monthly Farmers Market as well as artisan producers and traditional butchers, award winning bakeries and chocolatiers. We have a few spaces left on Thursday 17th March if anyone would like to join. Over a few hours together we'll start to explore the variety of independent food and drink businesses of Otley. It’s a small market town that's full of Yorkshire hospitality and another way of experiencing God’s own county.
On the 25th – 27th February, Wakefield Rhubarb Festival is back on!. After a rest in 2021, it is back with a vengeance, with a great celebrity chef line up and programme. The Yorkshire Appetite Team visited the festival in 2020 and we had a great time, meeting Ruby Rhubarb, tasting many delicious delights and getting to hear what sound Rhubarb makes when it grows! Really, you can hear it! Freya Cox, the vegan Bake Off contestant will be there along with best selling author Sabrina Ghayour, there is a whole programme of events for everyone along with the food and drink market and the ‘sheds’. It coincides with the growing season for rhubarb within the rhubarb triangle and you can find out how the plant is ‘forced’ in candlelight to grow.
Some of you will be familiar with Spark, the lively outdoor community space in York which has a range of start up bars, street food traders and artist spaces. A good place to try is Dogs Nose Taqueria, making quite a noise in the vegan scene in York with the first plant-based taco and burrito bar in the North. Their customers rave about their loaded nachos – topped with cheese, guacamole, pico de gallo, habanero onion, salsa and chipotle mayo. Give it a try and let us know what you think!
We are also currently, by request, developing a second Harrogate Tour for those of you who want to try more fantastic innovative food in our lively food scene. Watch this space!
