Yorkshire Appetite celebrate five years of Food Tours!
July 2022

A Food Tour? What is that? It is a question we still hear but we are very happy to say that at least 2000 visitors now, including some of your good selves, have had their own experience of one. Starting Yorkshire Appetite Food Tours was an idea that started to grow as far back as 2012. A week spent in Chicago on holiday in 2011 found my friend and I looking on the internet to see what we could do in the city. We found Chicago Food Planet food tours and decided to book on. Three hours later I was hooked. It incorporated what so many people like to do when visiting a place, getting to know the place, discovering a little bit of history, some local stories of people who live here and tasting the local dishes, and sharing all this with a group of fellow foodies. We were so impressed we immediately did the Beer Tour, my memories of that one are a little more hazy!
I kept in touch with the people at Chicago Planet Food Tours as I know they had a mentoring programme and workshop to help people start their own business but it wasn’t until 2016 when I left secondary teaching that I decided the time was right. In April 2017 Yorkshire Appetite Food Tours was born. Developing the tour in Harrogate was fun, lots of research on good places to eat and their recommendations and offerings. Then it was a baptism of fire as with no experience of ‘sales’ as such, I walked into several eateries wanting to entice them to be part of the Harrogate Food Tour. Luckily for us, many said yes and it was time to put together a ‘carefully choreographed food ballet’, making sure all elements, the story, the people and most importantly the food, work together. In July 2017 we launched our first tour in Harrogate with the aid of many friends who were willing to be guinea pigs for the first run throughs.
We started slowly as people became more and more aware of us and our reputation grew. Much shoe leather was used as we introduced ourselves to people within Harrogate. We introduced our Vegan Tour of Harrogate the next year which makes sure no one is excluded from our food experience and the York Tour came soon after. Of course, we had a year off (as I like describe our pandemic closure) but we are very pleased to say that once we reopened, our tasting partners were back too and determined to continue the journey. We run throughout the year and we now have a team of five great ‘Food Ambassadors’ as guides. Sharing their passion and knowledge of the towns, we strive to ensure every visitor has a great experience with us. We have met so many fantastic interesting visitors and it is this that makes all of us love our jobs. We have also built great relationships with our tasting partners and are delighted to be able to support independent businesses in the town. We have hosted all ages – the youngest being 4 months old and the oldest in their eighties, we have done the tour in all weathers – and often had all weathers in one tour! We have had dogs accompany their owners, families, groups of friends, hen parties, a stag do, work friends, work trips, Christmas parties, Women’s Institute groups, coach groups, school groups, families celebrating birthdays and couples celebrating anniversaries as well as those just on a good day out. We have had visitors from all over the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Spain, Germany and Romania. Every tour has been an absolute pleasure.
Afterwards, visitors tell us how they loved the food and many revisit the places we introduced them to. We have even had locals on the tour who have lived here for many years and tell us we have shown them something new. They often remark how great Yorkshire is and how lucky we are to live here. We fully agree!
I still love to go on food tour – I say it’s research but the truth is they are so much fun and you get to try delicious food, learn about your destination and be shown great places to eat – all without work on your part! So what are you waiting for. If you haven’t been on one, come on the tour- if you’ve been on one, come on one of the others!
Many, many thanks to all of you who have supported us over the years. We thank you very much and here’s to the next five years – and more!
Kay, Louise, Jill, Paul and Greg.
