A Box Full of Artisan Goodies!
June 2023

We are back from France and what an adventure we had. It was a bit of a shock arriving back in the
UK to be met with a barrage of bank holiday traffic on the M25 and M1 – blimey,
I thought they’d built a giant car park. Now, the summer begins. The weather has been beautiful this week and
we are all feeling those summer vibes.
The food shows and festivals are beginning again and there has already
been the Great British Food Festival at Harewood House. On the 24th and 25th
June, the Harrogate Food and Drink Festival is taking place on The Stray in
Harrogate. We will be there with our
stall so do come down and say hello.
What is so lovely about the festivals is that they are a fantastic
showcase for all those artisans working hard to deliver some great products all
over the county – from their own kitchens, farms and workshops. From homemade jams and chutneys to moonshine,
chocolate and cheese, have a look at who will be there here
Plus of course you have the annual extravaganza which is the Great Yorkshire Show. Taking place over 4 days from 11th to 14th July, this will be the 164th show. The first one took place in 1838 at Fulford near York and police had to use their batons to restore order when large numbers of visitors tried to force their way in without paying. Since then, it’s had a few years off for various reasons; world wars, covid, foot and mouth disease and exceptionally heavy rain. Now it’s out on the Yorkshire Show Ground on the edge of Harrogate and it has so much going on. A huge number of stalls and food opportunities but also a food hall dedicated to Yorkshire cheese and a great programme of events from pig competitions to stunt riding to sheep shearing. There’s usually a royal to be seen and at some point you will say something along the lines of ‘I never knew there were so many breeds of cow’. Well worth experiencing this celebration of Yorkshire.
If you can’t make the festivals you can still devour Yorkshire goodies – because, of course, there is the Yorkshire Goodie Box! This was launched during the difficult times of 2020 and beyond, when Yorkshire Appetite took a break as the restaurants and cafes shut down. This box of deliciousness can be delivered to your door; whether as a one-off gift or a monthly or quarterly subscription. We’ve really enjoyed researching all the amazing Yorkshire goodies we can include in the box and we’re sure you’ll discover some new delights in our boxes. Details here
Cold Bath Deli on Cold Bath Road in Harrogate is opening its wine bar again in the evenings from Friday 16th June and they have launched a great summer “Cold Bath Cocktail” involving hibiscus gin and prosecco – perfect for those summer evenings. They have a whole range of special events on over the summer with special menus including drinks and all with a theme. I missed the 1970s night – can you guess what was on the menu? Was it Findus Crispy Pancakes and Spam – find out at the bottom. Looking forward though to Portuguese night and Greek night in September. So if you can’t get to the actual country this summer, then get yourself along for these great evenings, it’s the next best thing.
We must of course congratulate our Tasting Partners for their success in the Harrogate Hospitality and Tourism Awards. Starling Bar Café Kitchen deservedly won Bar of the Year and Jespers Bar and Kitchen was shortlisted for Newcomer of the year. Well done guys!
There is still time to take advantage of our offer for a Summer Tasting Tour in Otley. Our July tour is full but we have spaces available in August and September if you fancy a lovely afternoon discovering the artisan food by the river Wharfe. Click here to find out more.
Prawn Cocktail, boeuf bourguignon and Black Forest dessert to finish.
