Celebrating the British Summer
July 2023

Ah, the British Summer. Despite being rather damp a lot of the time, our visitors are still enjoying our tours in York and Harrogate, and we are happy to celebrate six years this month since we started. The many fantastic people we have met on the tours have made every tour special and we are so grateful to share them with our loyal tasting partners. Don’t forget everyone, if you would like a little Saturday treat this summer, we have our Otley Summer Tasting Tours for you. Our July one is sold out but we still have spaces in August and September. Jill, our Otley expert, is waiting to show you around this lovely little market town and taste the wares of their great independent producers. We have strong family links to Otley with our parents both attending Prince Henry’s Grammar back in the day!
Come the 1st August, I hope that you will all be celebrating Yorkshire Day. Wear that white rose with pride. Yorkshire Day was first celebrated on 1st August 1975 by the Yorkshire Ridings Society. It began as a protest against the boundary changes in Yorkshire which took much of the East Riding of Yorkshire into Humberside and those affected wanted to consolidate their Yorkshireness. The date was chosen as it’s the anniversary of the Battle of Minden on 1st August 1759 (no, I’ve never heard of it either) as well as the anniversary of the freedom of slaves in the British Empire in 1834. However, it wasn’t an official event until Yorkshire’s councils agreed on an ‘Official Yorkshire Day Civic Celebration’ in 1985, which took place in York and every year they choose a different host city. This year it is Rotherham!
Traditionally there is a civic reception which includes a reception for the Mayors and other public figures along with a street parade. It is possible to get tickets for the reception but most are only available to members of the Yorkshire Society but if you fancy it, find out more here or just go along for the street parade! The reception traditionally begins with a reading and often entails eating a large amount of traditional Yorkshire food. One ongoing tradition is the reading of the Yorkshire Declaration of Integrity, or a recital of Yorkshire dialect.
There are, of course, many other ways to celebrate the day. There are some special events on, such as at Beningbrough Hall , or our Otley Tour on 2nd August (thought I’d slip it in again there) or you can make your own fun: drink Yorkshire Tea, eat Yorkshire puddings and Curd tart, drink one of the vast variety of Yorkshire gins and talk in dialect all day. That one will really annoy your co-workers!
Before we go, just wanted to celebrate one of our tasting partners in Harrogate. Those of you who have met Jesper of Jesper’s Bar and Kitchen will know how passionate he is about making sure his customers have a fantastic experience and how his knowledge of wine is exemplary. You should really go along just to meet him. With many years’ experience of working all around the world as a sommelier, what he doesn’t know about wine is not worth knowing. Every Saturday over the summer he is hosting “Cocktails in the Courtyard” from 5-8pm which is a delightful space with music and ambiance and there are some great wine tasting events too. Definitely worth a visit. Get details here
And remember Yorkshire folk on 1st August in all their glory!
