A New Food Tour for Yorkshire Appetite.
September 2021

Thank you to everyone who supported us at the Harrogate Food and Drink Festival this bank holiday up at Ripley. Another lovely event with plenty of Yorkshire Produce for the Goodie Box and great to meet so many fellow foodies. Plenty of people entered our prize draw for their own Yorkshire Goodie Box and the winner was drawn live – have a look here see if you are the winner!
The biggest news however was that we have a new tour! We were approached by Visit Otley to create a food tour showcasing the great artisan producers in this great little market town and with a booking for a group to focus the mind, the Otley Food Tour was born and had its inaugural run earlier this month. It’s a little different to our other tours in that we get to see behind the scenes and talk to the people behind the food. We have a baker, a gin maker, a cheese maker and a chocolatier all talking about their wares which of course the visitors get to taste! Finishing off in an old pub tasting the wares of the award winning local butchers (don’t worry, vegetarians also catered for). It is an enjoyable and tasty afternoon! We thought we would introduce you to some of the producers on the tour:
We were met with a welcome from not just any old Bellman but the Otley Bellman, Terry Ford, who won the Town Cryer competition earlier this year with the highest score in the competition’s history. Let’s just say we didn’t need to stand too close and it was a great way to start the tour.
Sally Hinchliffe has been running Bondgate Bakery for nearly 30 years with her partner Steve and is up VERY early each day making a range of breads, quiches, cakes and all sort of deliciousness including their famous Parkin! She hosts us in the very heart of the bakery and the smell is enough to make your mouth water.
David at ChezVin is an independent wine merchants selling a huge range of wines and spirits and hosted the tasting of the delicious Yorkshire Pecorino cheese – made in the town by Mario who has been selling this very popular cheese at Otley Farmer’s market for many a moon. He also introduced Nick, who produces White House Gin at his own distillery in the town.
We are then lucky enough to see Trevor Backhouse at work, a master chocolatier and baker of THE most fantastic cakes, they are indeed works of art. He allows us a view inside the production room where it all happens and of course, there is nothing as sweet as chocolates made for you.
We were then welcomed at our final stop by Jen at the Black Horse. A hostelry integral to the history of this ancient market town and a lovely way to finish with a tasting of award winning pork pies from butchers that have been in the town for many many years.
The tour in Otley is something a little different. We are very lucky that such great producers have agreed to be part of the tour and give up their time. This does mean however, that the tour is not available at the weekends because they are busy doing what they do best. We are also setting a minimum of 4 people on a tour and running the tour on requested dates only. So if you and 3 friends want a fantastic, interesting, tasty and enjoyable foodie day out, let us know a date and we will sort it for you. A lovely day out, as Wallace and Gromit would say.
