Things to do in Harrogate and York this Autumn!
October Newsletter 2021

There’s a few festivities coming up now to keep us
entertained in the lead up to the Winter Solstice as the nights draw in. Tours are still busy so do come along and don’t
forget our monthly Otley Tour and to get those gift vouchers for your loved
ones. Here are a taste of things to do
this Autumn.
Halloween.
For those made of stern stuff, discover the highlights of the many, many ghostly goings-on in York by partaking in a York Ghost Tour – led by accomplished story tellers, the dark evenings of autumn set just the right atmosphere to be spooked! Combine it with a visit to York Dungeon to give you a real taste of creepiness. For those who prefer to stay away from frights then stick to the friendly pumpkin. Birchfield Farm out at Summerbridge has their Pumpkin Festival running until 31st October where you can peruse the pumpkin patch and pick out the perfect one, combine that with some activities for the littlies in the family and enjoy Halloween fright free.
Bonfire Night
The strange celebration of a plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament by Guy Fawkes (a Yorkshireman no less) in 1605. The best feeling of community spirit in Harrogate is witnessing what seems like the whole town walking as one towards the Harrogate Bonfire on the Stray next to Oatlands Drive. Very wisely as congestion and lack of parking does dampen the spirit. This year it is on Saturday 6th November and it is free! The build up starts from 6pm – the fire is lit at 6.30 pm and a great firework display at 7 pm ish. A fantastic event for families, couples, friends (not pets!). My advice: dress warmly and wear wellies. In York, it’s only £10 for adults and £5 for children for a glowing evening at the bonfire and fireworks at Rawcliffe Park. Gates open at 5pm, fire lit at 7 and fireworks at 7.30 pm! Yorkmix Radio will be there to keep you entertained amongst others.
Christmas Markets
York’s very popular St Nicholas Market starts on 18th November and runs right to 23rd December. Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square will be lined with wintry Alpine chalets full of unique products and tasty treats.. A lovely, cheerful atmosphere guaranteed. After a little reshuffling, the Harrogate Christmas Market is back – in a new format. This year it will be spread out over the town centre with festivities kicking off on 3rd December and lasting all the way to the 12th. The date of the Christmas lights switch on is yet to be confirmed but we see a Christmas present has already appeared outside the Yorkshire Hotel. The market will include an artisan market in the Valley Gardens and people will have plenty of room to move about and visit all the market stalls.
Eat Parkin
This, for me, epitomises the Halloween/Guy Fawkes season. Parkin is a traditional gingerbread cake originating from northern England and most often associated with Yorkshire, in particular the area around Leeds. It was traditionally made after the oat harvest at the beginning of November then as time progressed, honey was added for sweetness. It is traditionally made now with oatmeal and black treacle and my Auntie Elsie had the best parkin around in her day. Look for it at fine food halls – Farrahs and Weetons in particular. Also if you fancy Parkin and other great Autumnal flavours of ice cream, then Vanillis Gelato on Cold Bath Road is where to head in Harrogate.
Turkish Baths
Not just for hen parties, women or turkeys! How come you’ve never been? You have not experienced such relaxation. The baths themselves are such a fine example of Victorian baths, they have a great historical beauty. They have mixed sessions, men only or women only and cost as little as £19 during the week. It’s a couple of hours and I guarantee you will feel stress free afterwards – it’s amazing how good plunging into a cold pool after lying on a hot stone bench will make you feel.
Museums
York’s Castle Museum is transformed on 13th November to tell its snow covered Winter’s Tale – if you haven’t been to this museum or haven’t been for a long time, then go and discover the story of York, there is so much to see and you can lose yourself in old York.
Celebrate the season with a Food Experience
Twice a week until December 19th, there is a great opportunity to discover the culinary and cultural delights of Harrogate and York. Taking a gentle stroll round the cultural centres, guided by our knowledgeable locals, you will learn about the history of the places – things I bet even you locals didn’t know! You also get to stop at several great independent food and drink places to try some Yorkshire Fare – a nice long lunch with a difference. You will be satisfied both in head and stomach! Yorkshire Appetite Food Tours runs their Harrogate Food Tour starting at 11.30 for 3 hours on Thursdays and Saturdays and York Food Tour starting at 12.00 for 3 hours on Fridays and Sundays. www.yorkshireappetite.com
The Pantomime
If you have never experienced the British Tradition of the pantomime or if you haven’t been since your childhood, treat yourself this year. It really is the most peculiar spectacular – the principal boy is played by a girl, the dame is played by a man, the audience gets squirted, the actors run through the audience and your voice will be hoarse from hissing, booing and shouting ‘behind you’. Cinderella seems to be popular this year with it being the story at both Harrogate Theatre and the Theatre Royal in York. Whereas the Grand Opera in York brings us Dick Turpin rides again!.
It's not quite time to settle in for the winter, still lots to experience this Autumn. Enjoy.
